Farmington Hills names Janice Jacobs Artist in Residence

The Farmington Hills Cultural Arts Division and the Farmington Area Arts Commission each year honor an artist who has made significant contributions to the arts in the community, as Artist in Residence. This year’s honoree is Janice Jacobs, who is not only an amazing quilter and part of the Farmington Players community theatre family, but a genuinely lovely woman who literally bubbles with enthusiasm.

Jan will be honored during the “2009 Passport to the Arts” celebration at the Costick Center on April 22-26 . The Festival of the Arts begins at noon on Wednesday, April 22, as the large exhibit hall opens to the public, boasting over 200 pieces of framed and unframed work for sale from the Farmington Artists Club, plus community displays, student art, and program information.

Events include:
• ART AFTER DARK – Friday, April 24, 7 – 10 p.m. Wine lovers can stroll the artwork while listening to a live “big band” jazz orchestra. Whole Foods Market of West Bloomfield will offer its popular variety of delicious international and domestic wines and sumptuous foods for tasting. Commentary on the wines will be provided by Whole Foods experts. A free raffle will include a wide array of prizes from golf to dinners out, for those who order wine at special discounts. Tickets are only $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Tickets are available at Whole Foods Market on Orchard Lake Road at 14 Mile, at the Costick Center or call 248-473-1848 to charge by phone. Art After Dark is sponsored by Whole Foods Market and Smart Bus.

• VIP CHAMBER RECEPTION – Friday, April 24, 6 – 7 p.m. Prior to Art After Dark, the Farmington/Farmington Hills Chamber of Commerce will host a special VIP reception, which is open to the public for an additional $10. Guests at the reception will enjoy networking and will meet local renowned artist John Glick, the Chamber’s honored guest, and may enter a free drawing for one of several beautiful hand-made Glick mugs.

• MOTOR CITY BRASS BAND CONCERT – Saturday, April 25, 7 – 9 p.m. The Motor City Brass “Big” Band sound is well known in the area for its “top notch” musicianship. The band will perform a wide spectrum of popular music from classical to jazz to please all audience members. Tickets for the concert are $10 for adults and $5 for 12 and under, and are available at the door.

• FREE FAMILY FESTIVAL DAY – Sunday, April 26, noon – 5 p.m. A delightful day for all, the Family Festival features artists demonstrating sculpture, pottery, weaving, lace making, quilting, and many other art forms; creative hands-on activities for children; a wide range of entertainment including Korean fan dancing, the Farmington Community Band, and musical ensembles; and plenty of art to see and buy. Lunch is available for purchase also.

The Festival of the Arts is presented by the City of Farmington Hills, Farmington Community Arts Council, Farmington Public Schools, and the Farmington/Farmington Hills Chamber of Commerce. Additional support is provided by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the Oakland County Office of Arts, Culture and Film. Thanks for the kind words. When Nancy C. called to tell me I received the award, not only did I start crying, I had to use the wall beside me to hold me up! This is so exciting for me! And the awards assembly is our final dress rehearsal for “Sweet Charity.” It’s going to be a remarkable day!
