Farmington Hills residents have not stopped talking about the four-hour Planning Commission hearing on the city’s Master Plan. The ones who stopped by the History Booth seemed angry and frustrated by a process that has not been at all the way the city handled its last Master Plan. Quadrant meetings and other outreach allowed them to feel like involved participants back then, while the current process, which represents a huge paradigm shift in the character of the community, have left them feeling out in the cold.

Someone asked why Farmington residents would want to have anything to do with Farmington Hills, given the way Hills city officials have spoken so disparagingly about our community. Excellent question.

A lovely and talented Republican activist of our acquaintance came through the tent wearing a “Republicans Against Welday” t-shirt, a one-of-a-kind personal statement that expresses her deep disdain for the primary candidate who has self-identified as a front-runner. You may recall her recent letter to the editor in the Farmington Observer.

Tony, our man on the street, reported back after making the rounds Saturday. Those who were selling unique, hand-crafted items told him they did well. The more commercial vendors, not so much. Sources inside Art on the Grand reports participants had a good weekend, with many browsers Friday and the bulk of sales happening Saturday and Sunday.

Friday night was a zoo – wall to wall people everywhere. Walker Tavern (the beer tent and reunion central) had good crowds all three nights. We listened from our neighbor’s front porch (the Multi-Cultural Multi-Racial Community Council would have been proud) Saturday evening, and the music seemed to really kick up around 10. A neighbor reported hearing music after 1 a.m. Saturday. We didn’t hear anything after midnight, but that could have something to do with sitting out in the sun for 10 hours.

“Republicans Against Welday” indeed. The majority of the folks that I spoke to absolutely do not want to see Welday be successful in the Primary. Whether or not this will translate to success for Richard Lerner is something we won’t know until the night of August 5. I am sure that Richard never envisioned that his campaign would be so popular that people would go out of their way to amass their own “Lerner” yardsign collection.
