Two years ago this month, Brian Golden* opened and closed a small museum in the Power House building at Grand River and Orchard Lake Road. The short-lived experience came with a bonus: A member of the Farmington Hills historical community mentioned that city had a historic house sitting empty in Heritage Park.
On December 16, Farmington Hills city officials will consider approval of an agreement to open The Heritage and History Center in Farmington Hills, the city’s first museum devoted to telling the story of Farmington and Farmington Hills. Among the artifacts that are expected to be housed there are the full collection of books and monographs published by the Farmington Hills Historical Commission, 19th century maps and the Pastways collection of Farmington area and trolley memorabilia. The deal is a simple one: The city makes the house ready and leases it to Pastways for $1 per year, and Pastways – with an advisory board – runs the museum and raises funds to keep it going.
